RETIRED school principal Flan Garvey has been reappointed this week as the chairman of the governing body of the Institute of Technology, Tralee.
The Clare public representative is also a student at the college where he is undertaking an MA degree, studying the history of the parish of Inagh and Kilna-mona.
He was appointment by Education and Science Minister, Mary Hanafin as chairman is for a five-year term.
It is his second period in the role having been previously nominated to the post by former Education Minister, Noel Dempsey.
Cllr Garvey was also selected unanimously by Clare VEC to represent Clare in Tralee.
Educated at Gortbofearna National School, St Flannan’s College and St Patrick’s Training College in Dublin, Mr Garvey started his teaching career in Mary Queen of Angels boys’ national school in Ballyfermot, Dublin in 1963. Two years later, he succeeded his late father, Clement, as principal of Gortbofearna National School before moving to the main parish school in Inagh in 1973.
Mr Garvey retired from teaching in the year 2000 but continued his interest in education through Clare VEC where he was involved in the boards of management of Kilrush Community School, St Caimin’s Community School, Shannon and St Anne’s in Killaloe.
A Fianna Fail county councillor, he is currently chairman of the board of management of Ennistymon Vocational School.
He is a graduate of UCD and UCG where he obtained a BA and HDE degrees in the early 1970s.
