Currans 2 Listowel Celtic 0
CURRANS moved clear at the top of Premier B at a cold Mounthawk Park on Friday evening with an impressive 2-0 win over Listowel Celtic.
It took the league leaders until the second half to see off the challenge of this young Listowel Celtic side who enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the first half.
To be fair, Celtic are undergoing a rebuilding phase with a lot of young players being introduced and many of them are showing a lot of potential, and Lis-towel will be hoping that the lads will stick at it as in recent years some have fallen by the wayside
Celtic’s problems lay in the final third of the pitch but they are trying hard to rectify them.
Currans have really come of age this season and proving that their recent win over Dynamos was no fluke, and this win over Listowel will make teams sit up and take note.
Listowel dominated early on but they rarely bothered the Currans’ keeper Kevin Moran and he was only called into action once to make a good save from a 25 yards free by Aongus Fitzgerald.
As the half progressed Currans were beginning to show their credentials with their physical strength giving them the edge against a younger side.
In the 30th minute Currans should have taken the lead when fine build up play between Seamus Flynn and Pa McCarthy put Kieran Scanlon through on goals but his shot from close range was wide of the target.
Five minutes later they almost caught Celtic off guard when Seamus Flynn picked up the ball 30 yards from goals and spotting the Celtic keeper off his line, Flynn attempted chip shaved the post but went wide.
Currans upped the tempo at the start of the second half, and they looked very dangerous from set pieces and corners.
Now they were totally on top at midfield and strikers, Pa McCarthy and Seamus Flynn were putting the Celtic defense under intense pressure.
Then in the 54th minute, Currans took the lead after a nice sequence of team play.
It began when a Noel Crowley free found Kevin Casey he slipped it through to Sean Daly who floated a cross into the box. The ball was flicked on by Seamus Flynn into the path of Kevin Casey and he out jumped everyone to head the ball to the net.
Now it was Currans that got completely on top and 10 minutes later they wrapped up the three points with another set piece.
A well flighted corner by John McGaley was flicked on in the box by Seamus Flynn to Philip Carey who headed the ball into the roof of the net.
