All roads will lead to the ploughing championships

KERRY farmers will make a beeline for Ballinabrackey, Co Meath where the national ploughing championships will get underway on September 23.

Competition will be intense as over 300 competitors line-up for 21 national finals, the highlight of which is the senior tractor championship. This will be contented by representatives from many countries including several past champions who will be hoping to recapture the prestigious title.

Organisers expect the attendance at this year’s championships to be the biggest ever. "We are very happy with the effort that has gone into the preparations.

This holds true for the arrangements at the exhibition site which has been transformed from a big, green field into an ideal location for 650 exhibits," said Anna May McHugh, managing director of the National Ploughing Association.

"The wide variety of the displays in the exhibition this year will be very obvious. There is still a vast array of farm machinery to be seen and the livestock section has grown into a major part of the event," she said.

This year there will be 11 marquees housing nearly 200 indoor displays and the exhibitors at the championships will include eight government departments and six political parties.
