Enda Kenny in buoyant mood as he targets Kerry seat
FINE Gael leader Enda Kenny has said he is “convinced” that the party can win back a Dáil seat in South Kerry at the next general election despite the latest opinion poll slump.
Speaking on a visit to Killarney, he said the party will be in a position to make an all-out assault on the constituency in a bid to win back the seat previously held by Dingle-based Michael Begley.
But he warned the party faithful that to achieve the goal, a united, cohesive and properly co-ordinated strategy would be required. “It takes a little time to get it co-ordinated but we will all work with one objective in mind,” he said.
“I am convinced we can win back the seat if we can harness all the support that we know exists,” the party leader remarked during the two-day FG think-tank at the Killarney Great Southern Hotel. Mr Kenny said the South Kerry constituency was “very far-flung” and, in terms of organisation, that created its own problems but he said he believed local party workers will be ready when the time comes.
“The party will be rejuvenated and the party will be ready when the election is called,” he said. The FG leader, who has family links in Killarney, said he was heartened by the improved performance of Cllr Seamus Fitzgerald and Cllr Sheila Casey in South Kerry in the last general election. “That gives us a strong base on which to build,” he remarked.
Mr Kenny, who used the Kerry visit to rally his parliamentary party members in advance of next year’s local and European elections, said he was not too concerned with the latest opinion poll findings which showed his support base slipping by two points to 26 per cent.
He said he was still only eight months into his role as party leader and that he has been concentrating on building party membership in key constituencies like South Kerry. Improved: Cllr Sheila Casey
