Sheahan: minister must give support
THE Minister for Education must account for how special needs children can function in mainstream classrooms without the help of special needs assistants, South Kerry TD, Tom Sheahan, has insisted.
He said the minister must provide alternative support for children with special needs when as many as 1,200 assistants cease their classroom work this Friday due to cutbacks.
"Through the government policy of inclusion, the idea behind the special needs assistants was to go give the special needs child a level playing field or, at best, a reasonable chance of keeping up with the mainstream.
"The minister must state and account for how this can happen in the absence of the special needs assistants," Deputy Sheahan stated.
"He has put no other support in place instead. It is not fair to expect the teacher to cope alone," he added.
"To date the minister has failed to provide parents and teachers with alternative methods of teaching and managing special needs children once the teachers have been withdrawn from the education system this Friday," the Fine Gael TD said.
"In the majority of cases these children need one-on-one attention," he added.
