O’Connor’s double delight the highlight in Tralee
By Murt Murphy
ON Saturday night Crotta O’Neill’s GAA Club held a very successful benefit night and a huge crowd enjoyed some excellent racing with Patrick O’Connor from Tarbert taking the training honours with a deserved double.
Saleen Killowen was sent off the 6/4 favourite to deliver the goods for Jim Brosnan from Kenmare. He was in front at the opening bend, just ahead of Jeff’s Sadie and led around the second bend and down the back.
He was going to be hard to catch as he galloped clear with Shift Hawk Eye now just shading second ahead of Jeff’s Sadie.
Shift Hawk Eye ran out of room at the second last bend, and Jeff’s Sadie moved into second place.
Saleen Killowen looked to be in trouble on the run to the line but Jeff’s Sadie just could not close the gap and Saleen Killowen had a length to spare on the line, winning in a quick 28.88.
The winner is owned by Jim Brosnan from Kenmare and trained by Patrick O’Connor, who was last year’s leading trainer at Tralee.
O’Connor completed his double in the very last race of the night which was won by Bellewood Prince who finished like the proverbial train.
The odds-on favourite Three One Three looked the most likely winner as he led from traps and was in front around the opening two bends and down the back.
However, once the talented Bellewood Prince grabbed the rails, it was clear that he was going to go by. He swept clear between the final two bends, before staying on strongly to win by four and a half lengths in 30.74 for joint owners Noreen McManus and Declan Moylan.
This was his seventh win and if drawn on the inside, he will be hard to beat.
The closest finish of the night came in the tenth race over 570 yards when three greyhounds crossed the finishing line together and it took the judge’s eagle eye to separate them.
Adrien’s Girl was in front at the second bend and skipped a few lengths clear of Jeff’s Rocket and Law Writ with Rathanny Billy being last at the opening bend after being baulked at the start.
It was still Adrien’s Girl who held sway around the final two bends but on the run to the line, Jeff’s Rocket began to power home while Rathanny Billy, now in the clear, was also making rapid late headway.
It was a desperately close finish as Jeff’s Rocket grabbed victory with a late surge from Rathanny Billy on his inside by a short head in 31.48, with Adrien’s Girl, a neck away in third.
The winner is owned by James Griffin from Tralee and is trained by his son Tony.
Let Him Tarry made it a good night for Abbeydorney and Donal O’Connell when his Let Him Tarry displayed blistering early pace to lead from traps.
Despite running a very wide course, he was always in control as he held on from the staying on Coole West Pete, winning by a half length in 31.57.
Millabbey Peejay followed up for Thomas Kearney from Abbeydorney, in the very next race over 750 yards, when he took it up at the second bend from Headleys Frisky and stayed on strongly to beat off the late challenge of the running on Kilcow Crash by a length and three quarters in 42.01.
Gerry Kerins took the opening race when Confident Neale was quickly away from trap six to win by three lengths from Sarkozy Daddy in 29.22, in the opening novice event, with Johnny O’Sullivan doing the training.
Coolboy Cáilín was always prominent as she led at the second bend. She ran right away to win by impressive six and half lengths in a quick 28.81 for Eric Prestage from Ventry.
Meanwhile, the second draw of the Supporters Club took place on Tuesday night last and the winning numbers were 16, 23, 26 and 28.
The jackpot of €2,100 was not won but the four lucky dip winners were as follows: Seán Evans (Lispole), Emma O’Driscoll (Tralee), Galvin, Murphy, Hooper, Dolan Insurance Co, and Damien Stack (Listowel).
The Kingdom Greyhound Stadium Supporters Club is sponsoring the Rose Of Tralee Sweepstake (A4), which is due to start next week so annual membership can still be bought from any committee member.
