Five appeals to Astellas plan
BY MARY MURPHY
A TOTAL of five separate appeals have been lodged with An Bord Pleanála against plans to install an 800 kilowatt wind turbine at the Killorglin premises of Astellas Ireland Ltd.
The company was granted planning permission by Kerry County Council for the erection of the turbine, a project which has the potential to provide over 20 per cent of the plant’s electrical demand and offset 1,052 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.
The referring of the decision to the appeals board will come as a major disappointment to the Killorglin firm as it had sought to garner support for the project locally.
Chief among these efforts was an information open day in the town at the end of January at which company executives explained the project, its design, the choice of turbine and its environmental benefits.
Appeals have since been lodged with An Bord Pleaála by Seán and Marguerite Falvey, Maurice Prendiville, An Taisce, Hanna Mary Griffin and Thomas Knightly.
Even without the appeal, the company had planned on a timescale of between 12 and 15 months to have the turbine delivered and erected, bringing the project well into 2011.
The future of the project will not now be decided by the board until mid November.
Astellas serves a worldwide market as the production base for the formulation and packaging of immunosuppressant medication (Prograf) which is used as a treatment for patients with heart, liver and kidney transplants.
Ointments for the treatment of dermatitis and fungal conditions are also packaged on site.
Currently the Killorglin facility has an independently verified environmental management system, ISO 14001, and the energy management system IS 16001 and had viewed the turbine as further move towards energy efficiency and its green credentials.
