Kerry popular but costs still a major worry
BY MARY MURPHY

KERRY has been named among the top destinations for summer staycation destinations, with 15 per cent of Irish visitors planning to holiday at home naming the county as their destination of choice.

The survey, carried out by travel and leisure website Ireland.com, reveals that 54 per cent of over 1,500 respondents intend to have their main holiday in Ireland this year.

In what can only been seen as good news for the Kerry tourism industry, 15 per cent of those questioned said they planned to holiday in Kerry this summer and the county was just narrowly beaten from the top-slot by Galway at 16 per cent. Other popular destinations include Cork, Donegal, Wexford and Dublin.

Hotels are the main type of accommodation for those holidaying in Ireland with over 43 per cent choosing this option.

Self-catering accommodation is also a popular choice with 27 per cent booking a holiday home, while 12 per cent said they intend to stay in B+Bs.

Over half of participants have chosen to stay in Ireland but 63 per cent of those still believe that Ireland is too expensive when it comes to accommodation, eating out and entertainment with only 12 per cent believing that Ireland offers value for money.

Of those choosing to holiday overseas, weather was the main attraction, though the high cost of holidaying at home was also cited by over one in five.

"It is one of the positive effects of the recession that increasing numbers of Irish people are choosing to holiday in Ireland this summer. This is excellent news for the Irish tourism industry which will benefit from increased domestic tourism," said Keith Mahon of Ireland.com

"The results show that many believe issues remain about costs in Irish holiday destinations and this is something that must be addressed.

"Consumers can play their part by shopping around for value-deals and availing of special offers," he added.

The survey was carried out in July with 1,515 people questioned about their holiday plans.
