John and Aoife retain their top wife lifting title
WHO said Kerry men weren’t the best when it comes to carrying their "wives" through shockingly difficult obstacle courses?
That theory was put to rest in the village of Sneem at the weekend when Skellig boatman John O’Shea from Caherdaniel and Aoife Desmond, a musician from Castlecove, were crowned Irish Wife Carrying Champions for a remarkable third year in a row.
They completed the gruelling Goosey Island course – including a demanding water jump – in the swiftest time on Saturday evening and they will now go on to fly the Irish flag at the world championships in Finland.
They shrugged off determined challenged from an international field – including a highly-rated celebrity couple from Japan who were so confident of success that they even brought their own TV crew with them to record the event.
The hilarious competition was part of a fun-filled family festival in Sneem which included other novel events like adult and children’s space hopper racing, tennis ball throwing and so much more with a fun fair in the South Square and novelty attractions, a craft market and traditional demonstrations in the North Square.
The village was packed for the duration of the festival and real family atmosphere prevailed as the shirt-sleeved crowd made the most of the entertainment opportunities presented and all the fun of the fair.
A GAA blitz was held in the local sportsfield on Saturday and the festival also included a children’s fancy dress, art exhibitions, a popular dog show and so much more.
