Forever in blue jeans, teacher Siobhan carries Kerry hopes
By: Mary Murphy

SHOWING just how well Kerry women can look in an old fashioned pair of blue jeans, primary teacher Siobhán Hayes will represent the county in one of Macra na Feirme’s most high profile competitions at the end of the month.

The annual Miss Blue Jeans Festival will take place on May 30 in Athboy, Co Meath with the Kerries, Tralee woman taking centre stage.

Siobhán (23) a resource teacher for three schools – Castleisland Boys School, the Gaelscoil and Currans – was entered into the competition by the Tralee branch of Macra.

"Most people don’t know yet – my friends and family know but nobody at work so it will be a big surprise when they read it in The Kingdom," Siobhan remarked.

"I have only been working at the school for two weeks, so it hasn’t really come up yet," she added. Siobhan is a graduate of Mary Immaculate in Limerick and a past pupil of Balloonagh Primary and Secondary School.

She has been a member of Macra in Tralee since January 2002 and has worked as a treasurer in the club for over a year. Miss Blue Jeans is one of three annual competitions hosted by Macra which also organises Miss Macra and the Queen of the Land.

"It’s a great honour to represent the county but it’s a bit expensive getting outfits for the three days," said Siobhan. Luckily though, she has secured sponsorship from the Kerry Motor Works and Heneberry Sports Shop in Tralee.

Up to 30 girls will take part in this year’s Miss Blue Jeans Festival from almost every county in Ireland and the overall winner will be picked following an interview.

All entrants will also have to do a little modelling over the weekend, to include one denim outfit and another of their choice.

"One of the rules of the competition is that you can’t be a professional model," said Siobhán "But in my case at least there is definitely no fear of that," she added. And there could be some hope of romance for at least one lucky escort since Siobhán is single at the moment.

But romance is far from the young teacher’s mind – with just weeks to go until the big day, shopping is taking up every spare moment.

"I kept meaning to get started but as usual I left it to the last minute and I will be raiding the shops around Tralee in the next couple of weeks," the Miss Blue Jeans Contestant commented.

"I won’t question it though – any excuse to go mad shopping," she quipped.
