GAA: Kerry bow out as Cork IT advance
By Murt Murphy
Cork IT 1-7 Kerry 0-6
IN nearly unplayable conditions at a rain and wind-lashed Austin Stack Park, Cork IT just edged out an experimental Kerry side in the Waterford Crystal Cup on Saturday afternoon. It was a game that lasted only 60 minutes as referee Shane Hourigan revealed afterwards he was unaware that it was meant to be a 70-minute game. Appartently, from talking to Munster officials afterwards, there may have been some communication lapse that saw match official Shane Hourigan receive written notification that the Waterford Crystal games were going to be 60-minute matches. But, appartently, the referee may not have received the correction by phone that all games in the McGrath and Waterford Crystal Cups were going to be of 70 minutes duration. However, Kerry boss John Meyler did not appear too perturbed afterwards when asked for his view about the game being only 30 minutes duration per half. Subsequently, Kerry hurling officer Joe Walsh confirmed that Kerry would not be lodging an objection so the result will stand. The mix-up aside, it was game where good hurling was impossible and neither boss, John Meyler (Kerry) and Pat Mulcahy (CIT) will have learnt anything from this futile exercise. The crucial score that decided the game was a CIT 24th minute goal, created by a surging Colm Casey run that say full forward and chief marksman Ryan Clifford shoot to the Kerry net. Kerry, thanks to the accuracy of wing forward Darragh O’Connell, had led until this point as the sides retired 0-5 to 1-2 apiece. The Kerry defence played well with full back Eamon Corridan having a pleasing debut where he had to keep an eye on the elusive Ryan Clifford from Newtownshan-drum, while Padraig O’Grady and Andrew Keane did little wrong in the corners. Tom Murnane was the standout player in the half back line and young Adrian Royle made a fine debut at wing back while the experienced John Griffin kept Eoin Cronin from Glen Rovers scoreless. Darran Dineen looks to have a bright future at mid-field as the St Brendan’s star hurled with vigour throughout on a day when it would have been easy to hide.
But the Kerry attack gives cause for concern with Division 2 hurling in mind. Only Mickey Boyle appeared to have the physicality necessary at this level while Darragh O’Connell looks to have the potential to deliver on day when skill will be rewarded. Kerry do need a target man and with John Mike Dooley put out to grass and Gary O’Brien not training right now, it appears that Aidan Boyle, who had to cry off, is Kerry’s new full forward. On Saturday it was his brother Liam that filled in but while Liam is a talented hurler, he is not a full forward so almost every ball that went into the full forward line was cleared by full back Eoin Dillon from Milford. Then again Dillon is talked about as a possible future Cork full back, so Kerry would have struggled there, whoever played. Accuracy deteriorated in the second half, as did the weather, with CIT shooting six wides in quick succession. Mikey Boyle and Shane Nolan brought Kerry to within two points but two late points from CIT subs by Michael Bowles and Tony Murphy secured victory. It was, however, a useful exercise for John Meyler in that he got an early game under his belt and now can concentrate on preparing for Kerry’s first game in the National League in a month’s time against Antrim.
